When
we do bike road tests,
there are several things
that we look for and comment
on, among them: styling,
comfort, horsepower, handling
and braking Vet the majority
of tech articles that
appear In this and other
magazines center around
either improving a bike's
styling or adding horsepower
to its motor. Well, a
you build a faster bike,
you better look into making
it stop equally well.
But, better brakes can
also add to a bike's visual
image. To that end we
have decided to equip
our hopped up 2006 Dean
Street Bob with a set
of polished floating rotors
and Z Plus bake pads,
from Lyndall Racing Brakes,
(LRB). These benders are
not only a match for the
bikes hot motor and revamped
suspension, but they well
also improve its looks.
| The
LRB rotors are a piece
of mechanical engineering.
They are fabricated
iron heat treated
420 stainless steel
The rotors' pad contact
area is super smooth
and dead flat for
better pad/rotor gap. |
|
For
silent operation, the
outer rotor is attached
to the corner hub with
10 spring-loaded trunnions.
The careers “star"
pattern blends well with
either wire wheels or
Harley's cast aluminum
wheels. The LRB floating
rotors fit all 2000 up
Harley’s except
for 2006 Land models that
are tit too with 10 spoke
cast wheels.
The
LRB Z Plus brake pads
use a combination carbon/Kevlar
friction material. The
Z-Plus pads have been
designed to give good
stopping power and run
clean while being quiet
There are LRB Z Plus pads
avail for most Harley,
from 1973 to present.

Our
new brakes worked well,
they were super quiet
and had excellent stopping
power along with hot looks.
Lyndall Racing Brakes
are available through
your Drag Specialties
dealer.

I installed a set of Lyndall
brake pads on the Road
King last year and was
so pleased with the results
that when the company
announced the release
of their new fully floating
polished rotors, 1 was
first in line to grab
a set. First I threw one
on the back of the bagger
(along with a fresh set
of Lyndall's Z+ pads)
just before taking off
for that big party they
hold at Daytona Beach
every March. I didn't
install the ones on the
front for the ride over
to Florida since 7 was
unfamiliar with floating
rotors, and being the
conservative mechanic
that I am (i.e. paranoid),
didn't want to be in the
middle of a trip and have
all three brakes screw
up on me. But the rear
disc performed flawlessly
during my 2,300 mile ride
and I couldn't wait to
see the difference when
I slapped the twin rotors
on the nose of the Road
King. But I was not prepared
for the huge increase
in braking power.
Lyndall starts with a
420 stainless blank, which
is then heat-treated to
Rockwell C-37 harness.
After machining, the rotor
is blanchard ground and
left 1mm thicker than
stock. It then goes through
a chemical passivation
process that removes surface
oxidation in a parallel.
This step aids in the
final polishing and allows
for the product's mirror
finish. It is then assembled
using 304 stainless wave
springs. If all that sounds
pretty high tech, consider
the fact that Lyndall
enlisted the design services
of C&D Aerospace to
spec the materials and
processes. This hired
gun even went so far as
to designate the end mill
to use for manufacturing
along with motor speeds
and feed rates (so I guess
this actually does qualify
as rocket science). These
are not cookie-cutter
units being punched out
in mass quantities. The
current production rate
is two per hour. Even
the venting holes are
drilled at a precise angle
(instead of the standard
90 degrees) to increase
surface cooling and to
reduce any "swooshing"
noise associated with
vented discs.
The
recommended pads for use
on the LRB rotors are
the Lyndall Z+ units and
the company even offers
a little something rarely
heard of nowadays: a lifetime
warranty on the rotors
if Z+ pads are used exclusively,
provided there is never
any metal-to-metal contact.
Plus the Z+ pads require
no break-in and are designed
to have no squeal, so
although they may appear
a little pricey, properly
maintained, you never
have to buy another set.
But if the guarantee isn't
enough to impress you,
the performance should.
That
1mm of additional rotor
thickness was not as evident
when I was only running
the rear disc. But after
I installed the twin set
on the front, I had to
endure somewhat of a learning
curve on the quick response
the added material provided.
These beauties will haul
the most fully loaded
bike down from top speeds
in a big hurry with only
mildly applied pressure
on the lever (don't grab
a handful or you may end
up ass over tea kettle).
And repeated hard braking
never gave any indication
of fade from over heating
. Being caught in several
of those famous Texas
spring from stranglers,
I can also attest to the
product's excellent rain
performance. The rotors
come complete with all
mounting hardware (it's
highly recommended to
replace brake rotor bolting
due to thread stretch
that occurs during torqueing)
and are exact replacements
to their stock counterparts.
These
units are available to
fit all H-Ds back to 1984,
as well as newer American
IronHorse, Big Dog and
Indian motorcycles (pricing
is the same across the
board). Lyndall's dealership
network continues to expand
and includes Drag Specialties,
Bikers Choice and Riviera
Engineering. Log onto
their website to locate
the dealer nearest you.
In the end, I only had
one complaint about the
LRB Polished Stainless
Rotors: once installed,
these beauties looked
so damn good I was shamed
into cleaning the rest
of the bike.
